Magic

In the world of Oaths and Omens magic is a limited resource only usable by a very select very. This was not always the case as thousands of years ago the world was flush with all kinds of magic. Then came the War of Ages. Magical resources were unleashed at cataclysmic proportions which wiped out tens of thousands in mere seconds. The gods, who granted mortals access to magic through their divine favor, became disillusioned with earthly beings and retracted their blessings. At the same time their avatars and children on earth retreated from the mortal realm, slowly abandoning humanity to its own devices.

The first to leave were the Merfolk as their father, Orthan the Great Whale, became sadden that his blessings were used to summon a Tsunami that wiped out the city of Hornhallow. Other gods soon left and after the Century of Mourning humanity found itself alone for the first time with only 2 gods left. Cerithiane, the Queen of the Damned and ruler of the Underworld, and Balbaron, Lord of the Pit. This left humanity with only Necromancy and Demonology as magical resources. Unshaken by the War of Ages and the Century of Mourning, Cerithiane and Balbaron believe this is their opportunity to claim the mortal realm as their own. The still empower their mages and encourage them to summon more undead and demons while performing profane experiments on other mortals.

The elder races are still remembered in song and story, but it’s been centuries since any were last seen. Home Page
